We live in a world full of diversity, gender expression being just one of the many wonderful complexities that define each individual’s uniqueness. Individuals are identified by gender in social and cultural contexts from birth throughout life. Gender Summit began in March 2017 as an idea already cooking for five years, after the first session of the Artist/Humankind: Location/Earth projects focusing on the many roles we play as humans on this earth. The first role we explored in 2012 was Caregivers.
Gender Summit's goals are to inform, educate and establish new connections providing opportunities to dispel rigid norms through conversation, art creation and problem solving in a safe and supported community atmosphere. The art making being just the first phase of this process and the show traveling and continuing the mission will be the next.
Art making occurred from April 2017 through July 2017 and included individuals ages 15 years of age to 75. 40 individuals arrived for screenings and 29 completed the process of making art in our space, while contemplating their own experience of gender expression focusing on past, present and future.
