When is a bowl of fruit just a bowl of fruit?
My mom has a saying, “When is a bowl of fruit just a bowl of fruit?”. It’s a question that represents a lot more than you would think. It is a question that every artist of color deal with. With the Portland art community being somewhat non-inclusive in general, artists of color find that the audience could or would misinterpret and assume some type of gold standard, to uphold a deeper meaning for said art when white artists have free range to do anything. It is an offensive and ridiculous assumption that I have experienced in my own writing and have heard artists frustration time and time again. It is the offensive notion that all artists of color only create with a social justice meaning. Not only is this beyond foolish but it traps people in a box that is nearly impossible to escape. Lee and Prithvi Chauhan to express themselves and cut loose for lack of a better word. A chance to show the world their view through their eyes and no one else’s. A focus on the fantastic, the colorful, the controversial, and most of all the human condition. (very good)
